Madrid, March 13th, 2019: The President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), Mr. Mihai Daraban leads the business component of the official delegation of Romania, in an economic mission, in Spain, in Madrid, which takes place on March, 12th-14th.

The headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Spain hosts the Romania-Spain Business & Investment Forum, which is being held today, March 13th, and aims to identify new ways of bilateral economic collaboration.

On this occasion, in the presence of Mr. Ștefan-Radu Oprea, Minister for the Business, Commerce and Entrepreneurship of Romania, and Mrs. Xiana Mendez, State Secretary, Ministry of Commerce of Spain, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and the Chamber of Commerce of Romania Commerce of Spain.

“If we look at the statistical data from the end of last year, we can easily ascertain how important the economic relations between Romania and Spain are. On the territory of our country, 5985 Spanish companies operate with a total subscribed capital of 1.71 billion Euros. At the same time, the value of direct investments was in excess of 1.55 billion Euros, in 2018. Even if the Romanian industry owns 30% of the Gross Domestic Product, we have to accept that we still have a subcontractor economy, many of the Romanian specialists from different economic areas are now operating in Spain”, said the president of CCIR, Mr. Mihai Daraban.

President of the Chamber of Commerce of Spain, Mr. Jose Luis Bonet, said at the opening of the Forum: “We are here to find new opportunities for developing economic relations between Romania and Spain. We all know that there are old commercial ties between the two countries that have strengthened over time. At present, there are almost 6,000 Spanish companies operating in Romania and, most importantly, these companies are established in your country. But I am convinced that there is even more potential for development and I am convinced that together we will find the best solutions in this respect”.

Minister for the Business, Commerce and Entrepreneurship of Romania, Mr. Ştefan-Radu Oprea, sent the message of the Romanian Government of trust and support to the economic development potential of our country: “The economic growth of 7% in 2017 and of 4.1%, according to the latest statistical data, for 2018, as well as the prognosis of 5.5% for 2019, we consider that for businessmen, represent those opportunities to be present in an increasing number in Romania”.

“This event was made possible by the excellent collaboration between the Romanian Embassy in Spain, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute and the Spanish Confederation of Employers’ Associations, a collaboration that creates the premises that we will develop similar projects in the future. Between Romania and Spain, there are very good relations at the political level and equally good at the economic level. The role of Romania is very important at the level of the European Union, especially since Romania holds the presidency of the Council of Europe. From this position, your country is involved in making economic decisions with a huge impact on all Member States, such as Brexit and the negotiations with China and the United States of America”, said Mrs. Xiana Mendez, Secretary of State, Ministry of Commerce of Spain.

According to the information provided by ONRC, at the level of November 2018, the value of trade between Romania and Spain amounts to more than 4 billion Euros.

Spain is ranked 8th in the top 50 by country of residence of investors with foreign participation in the share capital. The total number of Spanish companies active in Romania at the beginning of January 2019 was 5985, with a total subscribed capital of 1.71 billion Euros.
