Sibiu, May 26th, 2022: The Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Sibiu (CCIA Sibiu), in partnership with the Commercial Service of the Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Bucharest and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), organized on Thursday , May 26th, the conference “Anti-corruption best practices – education and prevention”.

The conference, held by experts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for Romania and Moldova, was followed by a presentation of the SelectUSA 2022 Program, managed by the US Federal Government, as well as a presentation of the SelectUSA 2022 Investment Summit. The event was attended by the president of CCIA Sibiu, Mr. Octavian Isailă, Deputy Prefect of Sibiu County, Mr. Daniel Moșin, vice-president of the Sibiu county council, Mr. Luca Marcel Constantin and the vice-rector of the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Dr. Horatiu Dura.

“Corruption is one of the biggest obstacles to global economic growth, social development and poverty reduction efforts. Corruption limits economic growth by discouraging investment and increasing transaction costs, leading to misallocation of resources and undermining the functions of state institutions. In order to improve the cooperation between the public and the private sector, CCIA Sibiu and CCIR support transparency in all stages of the public procurement process, as a way to reduce the risk of corruption and increase public procurement procedures. We encourage private operators to include anti-corruption clauses in their contracts, allowing the innocent party to unilaterally terminate the contract if the other party is definitively convicted of corruption and to use due diligence questionnaires to assess the integrity of business partners, during the entire supply and distribution chain “, said the president of CCIA Sibiu, Mr. Octavian Isailă.

The FBI agents present at the event emphasized that “in order to achieve good results in the fight against corruption, a perfect collaboration with the private sector is required. Every day, the number of threats increases, whether we are talking about IT or banking or real estate. Very often, the private sector manages to identify possible corruption issues before the FBI, the collaboration with our institution being extremely important in this case. But the FBI needs to take the first step and come to the private sector and ask how it can help them. Only together with the business environment, through coordination and education, can we build a true resilience against this scourge ”.

Opportunities for Sibiu companies to invest in the American market

The SelectUSA program (www.selectusa.gov) promotes and facilitates business investment in the United States by coordinating related federal government agencies to serve as a single point of contact for investors. SelectUSA helps investors find the information they need to make decisions, connect with the right people locally, navigate the federal regulatory system, and find solutions to federal government issues.

“As you well know, foreign investment is very important for any country, so implicitly for the United States. SelectUSA is an excellent opportunity to learn American law, about the business environment, business opportunities or the tax system. Romanian companies interested in investing in the United States of America can enroll in the Select USA program, the most important program promoted by the American authorities. “Thus, Romanian entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to meet the local authorities and, more importantly, to know the legislation, knowing that it differs from one state to another”, said the commercial attaché for Romania and Moldova of the US Embassy at Bucharest, Mr. Thomas Hanson.
