Bucharest, June 3, 2024: The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) welcomes the appointment of the president of the Court of International Commercial Arbitration under the CCIR, Mr. Ștefan Deaconu as arbitrator appointed by Romania in the International Center for the Settlement of Investor Disputes (ICSID), part of the World Bank.

ICSID, established in 1966, is the world’s leading institution dedicated to the settlement of international investment disputes through conciliation, mediation, and arbitration. Currently, there are 165 signatory states to the “Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States”, the document that formed the basis of ICSID.

“The appointment of Mr. Ștefan Deaconu as the representative commercial arbitrator of Romania within the most powerful professional institution in the world, ICSID, is nothing more than a recognition of the merits of probably the best professional in the field in our country. Mr. Ștefan Deaconu is the president of the Court of International Commercial Arbitration attached to the CCIR, starting from 2015, being unanimously re-elected for a new mandate in September 2023. Last but not least, we must remind the public opinion that Mr. Ștefan Deaconu is part of the team of lawyers that managed to avoid a real financial catastrophe for Romania, and here I am referring to the Roșia Montană trial. I am firmly convinced that Mr. Ștefan Deaconu will successfully represent Romania within the ICSID, knowing closely both his capacity for work and the professionalism with which he treats each individual case”, said the president of the CCIR, Mr. Mihai Daraban.
