Bucharest, May 17th, 2017: The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) and the Embassy of Canada in Romania organized the Business Seminar “Benefits of Economic and Trade Agreement between the European Union and Canada (CETA) for Romania” at the CCIR Business Center.

The event was addressed to companies interested in developing and strengthening trade relations with Canada. The seminar presented the benefits and opportunities generated by CETA signing and at the same time explained the main challenges that Romanian companies interested in accessing the Canadian market might face.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania was represented by Mr. Virgil Goagă, Director of External Relations, who reminded CCIR’s involvement, in all its means, in promoting the CETA agreement in Romania’s business environment, stressing that today’s seminar is the fourth event organized for this purpose in partnership with the Canadian Embassy in Romania. “CETA is an example, for other countries around the world, of opening new opportunities for free trade and economic trade,” said Mr. Virgil Goaga.

Mr. Bradwin Niblock, High Commissioner for Trade at the Embassy of Canada in Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova, said that 2017 is a year of multiple significance, the year Canada celebrates 150 years since the founding of the Confederation, but also the year marking the implementation of the CETA: “The most significant, comprehensive and progressive agreement that has ever been signed not only by Canada but also by the EU Member States. The CETA agreement reflects the joint commitment to economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic by developing investment and trade”.

Mr. Dan Kelly, CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, as a representative of Canadian private small and medium-sized businesses, has reviewed the ways in which they are working and underlined the business opportunities in Canada.

The event was attended by: Lucian Cernat, Chief Economist, DG Trade, European Commission, Customs CETA Agreement, Raluca-Loredana Udroiu (Nica), Indirect Tax Manager, KPMG Romania. The event ended with a Q & A session.

Background:
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the European Union and Canada will create new and far-reaching opportunities for both the European Union and Canada, open up new markets for exporters, generate high-quality jobs for employees, and strengthen existing economy of Canada and the economies of the EU Member States.

CCIR conducted an opinion poll among businessmen showing that the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the European Union and Canada is known in the business environment of our country at 65%, a positive balance but which can be improved.
