Bucharest, November 9th, 2016: The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) organized the multisectoral Business Forum, Romania – Islamic Republic of Iran, at the headquarters of CCIR Business Center, on the sidelines of the visit to Bucharest of S.E. Mr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In his opening remarks, the President of CCIR, Mr. Mihai Daraban, stressed the importance of resuming economic relations between our countries and released the following invitation to the participants:

“You should trust the bilateral economic relations Romania – Iran!”

In Romania, are currently operating shortly after the lifting of international sanctions, a number of 672 companies with Iranian capital with a investment of 7.66 million Euros, which proves that “companies understand (…) both the importance of the market and our geostrategic and geopolitical position”, said Mr. Mihai Daraban.

“For Iran, Romania is an old partner. (…) The visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania and the following delegates will be able to improve relations between the two countries and I am very glad that today we can see how these relations grow, especially economic ones, which are an engine for the two countries” said E.S. Mr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran. “Romanian-Iranian relations will benefit from government and bank support allowing important joint projects,” the Iranian foreign minister added, stressing that “Iran is an economically stable country, suitable for foreign investment.

“My presence here at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania, is always a great joy for me, because I see that here is happening exactly what a Chamber of Commerce is supposed to do, providing the framework and the support for development of the business environment, along with the state authorities, (…) and the Chamber of Commerce (…) produces these quality economic relationships that we need” said Deputy Prime Minister of the Romanian Government, Mr. Costin Borc.

In relation to Iran, Romania’s turnover is almost equal to the turnover of other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, namely Hungary, Poland and other countries in the region, further said the Romanian official.

Conjuncture is favorable for the bilateral development in areas such as oil and gas, where Romania “has expertise and there is partnership opportunities in the development of important projects,” the minister added Costin Borc.

The event organized at the CCIR Business Center headquarters was attended by Mr. Gholamhossein Shafei, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Romania and Iran Nationals Chambers of Commerce signed a protocol of cooperation that will support the implementation of joint programs in support of business.

In the second part of the Economic Forum held a discussion business-to-business session between companies from both countries working in sectors such as: energy, transport, medical industry, mining, banking, agricultural equipment, auto parts and construction.

Background:

Following the implementation of international sanctions regime on Iran, expanded and implemented at EU level by Regulation 961/2010, the Romanian-Iranian economic cooperation stagnated and commercial transactions were additionally affected by restrictions on banking operations plan, even products not included the sanctions regime.

Iran holds significant reserves of hydrocarbons (II ranks worldwide reserve of natural gas and the fourth place worldwide oil reserves), which constitute the main source of income of the state.

Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mines of Iran (CCIM), established in 1884, is a pillar of Iran’s institutional system business, is controlled by the state. President of this institution has the rank of secretary of state, is appointed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
