Constanța, 12th of September 2022: Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Navigation and Agriculture Constanța (CCINA Constanța), with the support of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), the Commercial Service of the Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Bucharest and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for Romania and Moldova, held on Monday, September 12th, the conference: US Cybersecurity Best Practices – threats, trends, and solutions”.
The migration of employees to remote work in the last two years, caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, as well as the armed conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine have led to a significant increase in the number of cyber-attacks. In this context, the business environment in Romania must have a well-established plan of measures to prevent such attacks. The conference ” US Cybersecurity Best Practices – threats, trends, and solutions” bring together experts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for Romania and Moldova, representatives of the business environment in Constanța, as well as local decision-makers.
“At the CCIR level, preparing the business environment to deal with cyber-attacks has started to become a priority and we are considering organizing, with the help of the county chambers, the Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Bucharest, as well as the specialists from Federal Bureau of Investigation for Romania and Moldova, of a series of events like todays. According to statistical data in the period 2020 – 2021, in Europe, the number of cyber-attacks increased by 37.7%. This trend is also confirmed on the Romanian market, where experts say that there were 31% more cyber-attacks in 2021 compared to 2020, the main targets being the retail and transport industries. Also, another study identifies cyber-attacks as the biggest threat to businesses in 2022. CCIR and the US Embassy in Bucharest have developed, in recent years, a real partnership for the benefit of the business environment in Romania, which thus benefits from the know-how and experience of American specialists”, said the president of CCIR, Mr. Mihai Daraban.
FBI experts present at the event stated that “the US is under intense attack in terms of economic espionage, which obviously includes cyber-attacks. Whether we are talking about countries like Russia and Iran or China, we are facing an unprecedented increase in such attacks on the American economy. Unfortunately, there are only 13 thousand FBI agents, and they are obviously too few to deal with this wave of attacks on the US. That is why partnerships with private companies are essential in stopping this phenomenon. In the last 12 years, the number of these partnerships has grown exponentially, which has made it very easy to exchange information between us and companies. For the FBI, this exchange of information is extremely necessary to determine whether it is a local, regional, or international attack. As far as Romania is concerned, absolutely all our actions are in collaboration with the competent authorities, when we talk about protecting state institutions. However, we need an equally good collaboration with private companies to be able to prevent in this way any attempt at economic espionage”.
