Bucharest, March 6th: The CCIR President, Mr. Mihai Daraban, received on Monday, March 6th, 2017, at the CCIR Business Center, the visit the US Ambassador to Romania, Mr. Hans Klemm. Topics of discussion focused on the relaunch of Romania’s position in the transatlantic market and strengthening economic relations between the two countries. It was also stressed importance of the project “Business without Corruption”, initiated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with General Dynamics.

Mr. Mihai Daraban, stated that CCIR’s main objective is to support the business environment through enhanced cooperation with transatlantic partners, in addition to the already existing relations developed with European partners: “We believe the economic potential between the two countries is significant and CCIR constantly acts to showcase”.

During the meeting, the President of CCIR reminded the economic mission organized in the USA (New York City and Washington DC) that took place in 2015, from September 27th to October 2nd, which was attended by 20 Romanian companies. On this occasion it was signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Daraban brought also into discussion the workshop on anti-corruption that will take place under the project organized by CCIR: “Business without Corruption”, project is to promote, among the business community in Romania, a culture based on the rejection of all forms corruption in relations with public and private sector through the implementation of institutional mechanisms to prevent and combat in companies, in Romania.

HE, the US Ambassador to Romania, Mr. Hans Klemm, welcomed the CCIR initiative in developing the project “Business without Corruption” and stressed the importance of fighting corruption as the basis for strengthening economic relations with the United States.

Also, Mr. Klemm noted that Romania’s economy is becoming more efficient, particularly in areas such as IT, automotive and shipbuilding. These are sectors that can increase their competitiveness, which could lead to greater integration of Romanian exports in global value chains.

The meeting was attended on behave of the US Embassy, by the Economic Counselor Mr. Michael Stewart and CCIR was represented by the CCIR President External Relations Adviser, Mr. Lazar Comanescu and CCIR External Relations Director, Mr. Virgil Goagă.

 

Background:
Commercial exchanges are conducted on a bilateral trade agreement, signed in Bucharest on April 3rd, 1992 which provides reciprocal clause for Most Favored Nation. In November 2016, the trade volume reached the amount of 1468, to 18 million Euros, of which imports were worth 583, 61 million and 884 exports, 57 million. According to the NTC, on January 31st 2017, there are 7291 companies operating in Romania, with American capital, with a total share capital of 800, 35 million – 14th place in the top 50 foreign investors. Also, the total active companies, with a turnover less than 10,000 lei in Romania with American capital, are 709, according to Trade Register on March, 2nd 2017.
