Mihai Daraban: “We need a direct route Romania – Georgia”

Bucharest, March 20th:The President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), Mr. Mihai Daraban, received on Monday, March 20th, the visit of the Ambassador of Georgia to Romania, Mr. Ilia Giorgadze, at the headquarters of CCIR Business Center.
The themes on the work agenda concerned the possibilities for tightening the economic relations between the two countries, emphasizing the Black Sea and the AGRI project, underlining the need for air and naval race to make the direct link between Georgia and Romania. However, the two sides agreed that bilateral tourism can be improved significantly, especially in the context of visa liberalization for Georgia.
“Visa liberalization is a step that will boost economic development and it’s also an advantage to be exploited to its full potential,” said Mr. Mihai Daraban, citing also the risks posed by the possible departure of workforce from Georgia to Member U.E. states.
S.E. the Ambassador of Georgia to Romania, Mr. Ilia Giorgadze, announced that the Georgian Prime Minister, Mr. Giorgi Kvirikashvili will pay an official visit to Romania in late April a.c. In this context, S.E. Mr. Ilia Giorgadze asked for CCIR support in organizing an economic event in order to present business opportunities in Georgia for Romanian companies. The President of CCIR, Mr. Mihai Daraban was very receptive to this proposal to organize: Romania – Georgia Business Forum.
Background:
Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector (AGRI) is a project to transport gas from Azerbaijan through Georgia to Romania and further to the EU market. The project involves the construction of a gas liquefaction terminal on the Black Sea in Georgia, and their shipping in Romania, where it will build a regasification unit.
Visas for Georgia could be raised at the latest in April. Ukraine is in a similar situation. First country in the European Union’s Eastern Partnership received a liberalized visa regime (in April 2014) was Moldova.
