Cooperation CCIR – Embassy of Australia in Romania to strengthen bilateral trade ties

Bucharest, September 2, 2024: The President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), Mr. Mihai Daraban, had, on September 2 this year, an official meeting with H.E. Ms. Alison Duncan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia in Romania, in order to establish a collaborative economic relationship between the two institutions.
“Even if there is a considerable distance between Romania and Australia, the two states have a fairly sustained economic relationship, at the moment, on the territory of our country, 891 companies with Australian capital are active, with a subscribed capital of 46.3 million of euros. Also, at the end of last year, the total value of trade between the two states was 124.91 million euros, an amount far below the potential, but which can be increased if we take into account the importance and positioning of the Constanța Port. Thus, goods entering through the Suez Canal need only four days of navigation to the Port of Constanta, compared to 13 days of navigation to the Port of Rotterdam, which obviously means lower costs for exporters. Last but not least, it must be taken into account that the states of Central and South-Eastern Europe have recently had a sustained economic growth, which can translate into new business opportunities for Australian investors”, said the president of the CCIR, Mr. Mihai Daraban.
“Romania offers significant opportunities for investment and commercial collaborations, especially in areas such as information technology and infrastructure, with the Romanian economy having significant growth potential. There is definitely a real progress of Romania in the field of economic reforms and integration in international structures, which means economic and political stability for attracting foreign investments. Thus, it is very important that together with the CCIR we strengthen the current economic partnerships between Australia and Romania, investors from both countries being able to benefit from very advantageous mutual collaborations. Australia is an important partner in the Pacific and is in great need of a free trade agreement similar to the one between the European Union and New Zealand”, said Alison Duncan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia in Romania.
